Practice — step by step

Beam reach to the buoy

The buoy is due east; wind from the north means a beam reach.
Sheet in, keep the rig upright and go straight.

Downwind buoy

The buoy is downwind, a little east.
Rake forward to bear away, sheet out, and sail a broad reach or run.

Upwind buoy

The buoy is straight upwind, inside the no-go zone — you can't sail straight there.
Zigzag: close-hauled → tack → close-hauled again.

New wind direction

Now the wind blows from east-northeast (60°).
Find the wind on the compass first, then plan your course to the buoy.
